The Colorful Life of a PR Student

Alright everyone so midterms are now a thing of the past and can begin to look forward to all of the exciting things we have planned for the rest of the semester! Hopefully everyone is at least okay with their grade if not there is no need to fear because there are plenty more opportunities for you to get a boat-load of points! In the meantime don’t worry I will fill you in on what we will be doing this week and some other fun stuff going on that you should all be aware of.

So this week we have a lot going on so prepare yourself. When tomorrow comes around if you hate this class (which I’m sure nobody does and if you do please keep it to yourself) you can drop it because tomorrow is the last day that you are allowed to drop classes. Also, don’t forget that you have your social media to do this week, and you need to have your Press Release done by Wednesday by the beginning of class so hurry up and power that out.

While we’re on the subject of press releases it might be a good idea if I get to the point of telling you what you need to blog about for this coming week. For this week’s blog you will need to write about “Five Ways to Write an Effective Press Release” I know this may seem tough since you just started doing press releases last week, but don’t forget there’s this wonderful thing called the internet that has all the answers to any question you may be curious about! Don’t be afraid to search the internet for help it’s your friend…

Alright everyone it’s about that time again! This is the week you have all been looking forward to all year! This is the week where you will begin your second blog topic and will get together to form the groups for when you begin your Public Relations Campaign…I mean, yeah this entire paragraph may have been sarcastic, but it will be the most fun of your lives. However, you are all adults, so you are fully capable of powering through this!!

This week you will be working on your blogs which have to be about an unethical case in which a corporation took part in. You’re job on this assignment will be to find an organization who came under scrutiny for engaging in unethical behavior. When you do this you will need to tell what the organization has done differently, and if you believe that the organizations behavior hurt the organization’s long-term existence or if you believe that it was something forgivable.

You may think “Well you lied to us in the first paragraph by saying this doesn’t sound like a fun week.” And you’re right I may have fibbed a bit, but the campaign is something that definitely has the potential of helping you in the long run! This gives you real world experience in the world of Public Relations and helps you in the real world when it comes to networking.

As for the things we will do aside from the forming of groups and your blog, I strongly hint that you should all read Chapter 9 because there may or may not be a quiz on Wednesday. Don’t worry you don’t have to thank me I’m the type of guy that likes to give out warnings, so you’re all extremely welcome.

Some example of unethical cases by organizations are hyper linked right >>HERE<< Those are some examples which may help you form an idea of what you want to do. Don’t wait until the last second to post your blogs because it may be stressful doing the research for this along with the other social media work which is due every week as well! Remember all of this is due on Monday’s at Noon.

Also, if you don’t like this blog topic you have the choice of doing a second topic which is “How can you gain more Twitter followers and how this can help me with Networking”. Now let’s get to work and finish this week strongly! (I know I’m a motivational speaker now!!)

What’s happening everybody? Just so everyone is fully aware it’s about that time in the semester when you will begin to hate your lives just a little bit more than you should. The cause of this will be that it is that time of the year where you are introduced into the world of blogging and have to add a little bit more work to your hectic schedules…..WOOOOO! (That is a sarcastic statement and yes, I do feel bad for each and every one of you..).

So, in light of you starting your blog here is the reminder of what you will be doing! For your first blog your topic will be talking about 5 Ways to be and Effective Blogger or you can do a blog over how Social Media has Changed the World of Public Relation. These blogs should be no less than 300 words and will need to have a picture with a citation and the links to all of the links that you used as sources. Along with all of these tasks you will also need to make two blog comments, one to a classmate and another to a professional blogger. Each of these comments will need to be 50 words in length and will need to be posted to your Blog Comments page!

Also, I have a weekly reminder for all of you! This week you will have your Code of Ethics page due on Wednesday. This assignment should list 5-7 things that you find ethical and should match that of a company you want to work for. You will need to use sources on this assignment if you get anything off the internet or a company’s website. (Example at the end of blog!)

Keep in mind that even though the blogging seems like a pain in the ass that you also need to keep up with your social media assignments. This includes LinkedIn and Twitter. These assignments will add up in your grades throughout the semester so be sure to do them.

MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING YOU DO ONLINE (BLOGS, LINKEDIN & TWITTER) ARE POSTED BY MONDAYS AT NOON!! IF NOT, WE (TERENCE, MULLEN AND I) WILL BE VERY UPSET!

Code of Ethics example!

Hello everyone and welcome to the world of Public Relations.  In this class you will be covering a vast amount of information! So prepare yourself, but in all seriousness as long as you have the dedication to do your work you will be fine.

When it comes to this class your blogs will have to be similar to this one and have some requirements in it which you may or may not like.  You will need the following things in your blog:

A catchy title, 300 words, hyperlink, and a photo with a citation, a blog comments page and an about me page. When it comes to commenting you will need to make 2 comments each week. These comments will take place on another classmate’s blog and then on a professional blog. Each of these comments will need to be 50 words.

Don’t be afraid to add a little bit of your own flavor to these blogs. One important part of blogging is to make your blog have a personality. Nobody wants to read a dull blog that’s just filling up the lines and adding more words. Give it a little….well scratch that…give it a lot of shine and awesomeness. That’s a word right..?

Now this may seem like a difficult task, but don’t worry it is completely possible and us TA’s made it out of this class with only a couple bruises, scratches, scares and crying a little bit you should be fine!
